Harvey Mudd February Fly-In for Junior Women [Deadline past-Plan for next year]

We are excited to announce that our winter fly-in for women, the Women’s Introduction to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (WISTEM) will take place on February 1-3, 2018. The WISTEM program consists of both a “residential” visit to campus and an extended online engagement that will see students through the fall of their senior year. The program is free for all invited students, including meals, lodging, and transportation to campus.

The residential component of the program exposes students to our community through a stay in our residence halls, tours, classes, a mathematics workshop, and an HMC Alumnae panel. Students also engage in topics relating to identity and intersectionality, and how these relate to STEM and the college process via sessions lead by admission staff and our Office of Institutional Diversity. The online component includes monthly webinars with STEM professionals and admission staff, as well as monthly assignments. The online part is low-commitment, with students spending a maximum of 3-4 hours on it per month.

WISTEM is open to all women who are juniors in high school (plan to start college in Fall 2020), are U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents, and live in the United States or Puerto Rico. Young women of color are particularly encouraged to apply for the program as its online component will highlight women of color in the STEM professions.

Interested students must submit the online application as well as a resume and unofficial transcript (including first quarter 11th grade) by December 17, 2018. Look over our WISTEM flier or visit hmc.edu/wistem for more information.

This year we are asking you to dig deep and make your scholarship essay personal. A citizen comes in many shapes and sizes. Some serve their community by voting and participating in political events. Others serve through entrepreneurship or philanthropy. We want to know what you think makes a good citizen in your community. We encourage you to bring emotion, creativity, specific examples (including current events), and well-researched facts into what you write. A good essay will demonstrate how citizenship is not an abstract idea, but is, in fact, action inspired by constitutional principles. We can’t wait to see what citizenship looks like in your community! Here
